Speaking to Última Hora, Eduardo Gustale, vice minister of Rediex at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, said that Alto Paraná — on the border with Brazil — is home to 49% of Paraguay’s maquila industry and about 60,000 registered companies, most of them micro, small and medium-sized businesses. The department produces auto parts, metal products, textiles, plastics and pet food, mainly for Brazil and Argentina.
Key figures
- Alto Paraná accounts for 15% of national exports with certificates of origin, according to the report.
- Maquila now generates 70% of manufacturing exports, according to the official.
- For Paraguay Business Week 2026 (November 11–13, Itaipú Technology Park, Hernandarias), Rediex aims to exceed US$600 million in business intentions and bring together 1,200 companies.
The next step: local suppliers
The stated goal is for maquila companies to source more inputs and services locally — metal parts, packaging, maintenance, logistics and software. For supplier SMEs, joining that chain involves contracts, standards and certifications that should be properly formalized.
Note: in its July 2026 statement the MIC put Alto Paraná’s share at 45%; the 49% figure comes from the statements reported by Última Hora in November.
